THCa has been used in a few products, but now many companies are making THCA products that can be consumed or applied topically. THCa products are available in both recreational marijuana dispensaries and medical marijuana dispensaries. However, they will be more common at stores that have a greater focus on medicine. You won’t be able to burn these.
Is THCA a legal substance?
Legality of THCA can be a tricky subject. It is considered a part of the plant, even though it does not have psychoactive properties. If exposed to heat repeatedly, THCA will turn into THC. It may also be converted to CBN which is a semi-intoxicating substance that comes from cannabis. Some US retailers have started selling THCA without a medical card. This is not a guaranteed thing, as it depends on the local and state law.
Even though THCA doesn’t appear on the list of scheduled substances, local laws and federal regulations still apply if you are caught with an amount of THCA that is illegal, like weed or concentrated products. The arresting officer won’t take into consideration that raw cannabis doesn’t have an intoxicating effect if they find you with a pound.
Is THCA also known as Delta-8 or Delta-9?
THCA (Tetrahydrocannabinol) is an acidic version of the delta-9 THC compound, which is cannabis’ most potent intoxicant.
Delta-8 THC is the same as delta-9 THC, however, their arrangement differs and affects its effects. The hemp plant is used to make delta-8-based products. These must be below 0.3% delta-9.
Delta-8 is also derived from THCA, called delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, but little research exists to understand how it measures up against THCA.
When consumed, delta-8 THC and delta-9 have a similar intoxicating effects. They do not have the same acidic nature as THCA.
